Esteban Ocon moved to Haas from Alpine

Esteban Ocon has outlined how his time with Haas in Formula 1 has “incredibly surprised” him so far after spending a stint at Alpine that ultimately ended in disarray.

The Frenchman spent five years at the Enstone-based team between 2020 and 2024, famously taking his maiden race victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021.

But despite his dependable results, his time with long-time karting rival Pierre Gasly last year meant he was unceremoniously ousted from the team at the end of 2024.

Following contact with Gasly in Monaco, then Team Principal Bruno Famin had threatened Ocon with “consequences”. A month later, it was announced he would be leaving.

However, he quickly signed with Haas for 2025 and beyond, partnering rookie Oliver Bearman in a brand-new line-up at the team.

And looking back at the 14 races he has raced to date with the Kannapolis-based squad, Ocon was quick to draw a contrasting parallel between the two outfits.

“Compared to my previous experience, it’s a healthy environment,” Ocon told Motorsport.com.

“As I said, no one’s hiding behind anything. If we don’t do something right, we talk about it and hope not to do it again. And we talk about it straight away at the end of the race.

“And that’s good, because if you don’t talk about it – which is what I’ve experienced before – then you [are] going to do it again. That’s the main thing.

“This team is incredibly motivated. It can sound crazy, but I’ve seen some people not motivated in the past, even working in the Formula 1 paddock. That’s probably the worst thing.

“As a driver like me – who puts his heart and sweat into the work, to do everything perfect before I get to the track – when you turn up and you see somebody looking at his check-in on Monday, it’s quite tough. And I’ve seen that in the past.”

Ocon Hails Haas’ fighting mentality

Since the team’s debut on the grid in 2016, Haas has been one of the smallest outfits in the paddock in terms of budget.

Yet, Ocon, who has only been with the team since December last year, and has worked with teams like Mercedes in the past, was surprised by how innovative and steadfast the team is.

“Now, I’m not going to say everything’s perfect. There are things that we need to improve, obviously. But we have a very solid base to work on since I joined, and we are moving forward. And I’m glad with the way it’s going,” Ocon continued.

“Designing a steering wheel with a double clutch, it took them a month, which was ridiculous.

“I was incredibly surprised with that, and I’ve never seen any other team do that, even the big ones that I worked with. Normally it takes a lot of time for that to come.

“We were claimed to be the smallest team. We are. But, you know, some of these reactions are top class.”

Esteban Ocon has praised the turnaround at Haas in 2025

Esteban Ocon has conceded that he was concerned that Haas’ 2025 Formula 1 season would be a “lost cause” after the team endured a disastrous start in Australia.

Haas headed into the opening race in Melbourne having undergone a seamless pre-season where mileage and long-run data took precedence over outright lap times.

However, the Kannapolis-based squad was soon dealt a tremendous blow as the Albert Park Circuit laid bare a glaring limitation with the VF-25 in high-speed corners.

With no short-term solution to the unexpected issue, Ocon and team-mate Oliver Bearman were eliminated in Q1, a worrying six-tenths behind the cut-off point for Q2.

However, Haas rebounded with both drivers amassing points at the second race in China, which preceded a revised floor being accelerated to the next event in Japan.

With more updates arriving at Imola and Silverstone, Haas has steadied the ship to be engaged in a close midfield battle, where 17 points cover sixth through to ninth.

Ocon has commended the team’s response to that initial setback, as he recalled how he departed the season-opener fearing that Haas would be resigned to the back.

Asked to summarise how his debut campaign with Haas has gone, Ocon told media including Motorsport Week: “Going in the good direction, I would say.

“It hasn’t been smooth the whole time, but we were able to get some weekends where we thought, OK, that was a really strong one.

“There was nothing we could have done better and there was a lot of learning.

“We started, clearly, as the last car in Australia, and we fought back in a magnificent way.

“The team was able to react to certain situations in a way that I felt [that] it was a lost cause, and that wasn’t the case.

“It’s been great to see how much pride the team takes when we do certain results, and I’m really proud of everyone in the way we’ve been able to deliver and improve.

“We set ourselves in a good position now where it’s a tight midfield, and we need to deliver every time we are out there, and that will make the difference at the end of the year.”

How Haas avoided ‘catastrophic’ problem

Haas boss Ayao Komatsu believes the team’s approach to overcoming the problem – which he likened to a “bomb” – is a testament to the culture that’s been produced.

“After Imola, we knew we [were] on top of that Melbourne issue, so then we could do a normal upgrade for Silverstone, which was pretty good, I would say,” he said.

“I think especially considering who we are, I think we proved again, like last year, I think our development was excellent.

“And then with the VF-25, now with the Silverstone upgrade, we’ve got a car we can fight in the top 10 with if we execute every single time.

“I think every weekend, we’ve got to take it one step at a time, just do the best job possible.

“I think I said this bit many, many races ago: if that had happened 12 months earlier, I think that would have been catastrophic.

“But throughout the last year, we built a foundation of trust, supporting each other, working together, so we could deal with that situation. I couldn’t be happier with the reaction I got.”

Haas missed out on points on Sunday in Belgium

Esteban Ocon bemoaned two strategic blunders that cost Haas crucial points in the Constructors’ Championship in the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.

Both Haas drivers started the 44-lap race at Spa-Francorchamps on the cusp of the top 10, having secured a vital double-points finish in the Sprint Race.

Ocon, who started 11th, revealed how a peculiar tyre choice, plus a botched strategy, handicapped him in the midfield battle as he dropped down to 15th.

While the majority of the grid pitted between Laps 11 and 12 to swap to slicks as a dry line had formed, Haas left Ocon on waning Intermediates until Lap 13.

“I think there are two very crucial decisions that we didn’t do in the right way,” Ocon told media including Motorsport Week.

“We need to review as a team because we had the pace today to score with both cars.

“Once we got going and everything was normal, the pace was there. So, it’s a big shame. The first one obviously, yes, was boxing two laps too late.”

The Frenchman then divulged how the team decided to service him with a used set of Medium tyres that further impeded his charge up the field in a delayed and interchangeable race.

“We need to review these last two races because I feel, you know, when it’s wet we don’t put things together,” conceded the 28-year-old.

“And then the other thing was boxing onto a used set of tyres while we had a new one in the truck ready for us.

“So, I did basically my 35 laps on a used set of tyres while we had a new set of Medium ready for us in the race. So, yeah, that’s a big and costly mistake.”

Esteban Ocon remained on Intermediates too long at Spa

Ocon’s team-mate, Oliver Bearman, who pitted a lap before the Frenchman, was employing a higher downforce set-up owing to the rain forecast.

But the FIA’s decision to delay the race for 80 minutes to allow for the weather to clear up and yet another strategic blunder cost the team points.

Haas currently sits ninth in the Constructors championship, only eight points away from Sauber in sixth.

“The team boxed him [Bearman] one lap too late and they boxed me two laps too late in that sense,” Ocon surmised.

“We should have both been on the earlier side basically. And if we would have done that, I think today would have been a different story. So, yeah.

“So, we will review everything, you know, if I need to give more information in the future.

“But they have a very clear process on who takes decisions and what into the team. And, you know, I believe that I did what I needed to do.”

The engine issue that blighted Bearman

Bearman was briefly running in the points, showcasing the outright pace of the VF-25.

That said, he concurred with his team-mate about the miscalculation the pit wall made in deciding the correct switchover point.

The likes of Pierre Gasly, Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg stopped on Lap 11 with Bearman called into the pits a lap later.

Eventually, Gasly rounded off the final points paying position in 10th as Bearman slotted in right behind him in 11th.

“Incredibly frustrating, I think the main frustration, you know, we did box a lot too late from the Intermediates to the Slicks and got undercut by a few guys, but it happens, you know, it’s one of those where it’s really difficult to judge,” he examined.

To add insult to injury, the Briton’s Ferrari power unit seemingly gave up on him midway into the race, and Bearman couldn’t make up the deficit afterwards.

“Honestly, from my side, I didn’t really give much feedback also on the track because I was nursing a problem with the engine,” he continued.

“I was struggling with my battery charge and everything. Then after the stops, I was an P10 just behind Hulkenberg and then coming out of the last corner, I had no power, the engine went to limbo and I lost three spots to Gasly, to Alonso, to Yuki as well.

“Then I spent the whole race just pissed off and trying to catch it back, but it’s impossible to overtake here.”

Esteban Ocon has said that the promises made to him when joining Haas have been kept, saying that the team’s Formula 1 results this year have aligned with its targets.

The Frenchman moved to the American squad this season from Alpine, forming a new driver line-up with rookie Oliver Bearman.

With half the season gone, Ocon has already matched his 2024 points total – 23 – having shown some impressive race pace alongside the Briton.

To many, a move to Haas may have been seen as a risk, but the team has so far outperformed Alpine, to whom it narrowly missed out on sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship last year.

When asked if Team Principal Ayao Komatsu’s expectations for this season have matched reality, Ocon told media including Motorsport Week that so far, things are comparable.

“Yes, for sure,” he said. “There were no lies in what Ayao said. Things are going as they should be, of course. We want to have more pace.

“This is the thing that we are focused on and that we need to sort out. But all the rest is very straightforward, very clear, and focused on one target, which is the important one.

“It’s the track, so I’m happy.”

Ocon pleased with increasing ‘understanding’ with Haas engineers

Ocon has previously talked about his burgeoning and fruitful relationship with his engineers, led by Laura Mueller.

Back in May, he said he was buoyed by their hard work, saying it was “awesome to see how much effort they put in, how motivated they are.”

Ocon reiterated this at Silverstone, providing an update on how his work with the group has been progressing.

“We’re understanding each other a lot more, working on all the little topics,” he said. “I’m learning a lot alongside her [Mueller].

“And yeah, it’s been strong races. We’ve made a really solid job, without mistakes, and it’s been strong.”

The Haas drivers collided at Silverstone late on

Haas boss Ayao Komatsu refused to apportion blame to either driver after Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon collided during the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

The Kannapolis-based squad experienced a challenging outing at Silverstone, which culminated in a drop down to ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Haas had brought a set of upgrades to the Northamptonshire-based Circuit, but were not able to maximise the VF-25’s potential to capitalise on the mixed conditions.

Bearman got through to Q3, but his 10-place grid drop for a red flag infringement in FP3 meant he started the wet-dry thriller in 18th, while Ocon lined up in 15th place.

In changeable conditions, the duo collided going into Brooklands on Lap 44 and executed a synchronised pirouette, finishing outside the points at the chequered flag.

Komatsu, however, deemed it a racing incident, absolving his drivers from any blame.

“Our drivers touching is the last thing that should happen,” Komatsu told media including Motorsport Week.

“But I looked at the onboard of both drivers, I spoke with them both, and for me it was a racing incident.”

The Japanese engineer instead shouldered the blame, citing that the reason the two came together was that the team had failed to optimise the race weekend.

“We executed a terrible race today,” he conceded. “We have to be better.

“We shouldn’t be starting from P14 and P18 where we’re then trying to force the result.

“We need to focus on executing three clean days on a race weekend and getting the result that our car deserves.

“Again though, if you look at how they ended up in that situation, the pitstop timings for that stop were correct, so we pitted the lead car first.

“Ollie then went off in a high-speed corner, and that’s why he was behind his team-mate when Esteban came out after his stop.

“As Ollie had hotter tyres than Esteban, he went for the overtake, but we shouldn’t have been in that position to start with. It just shouldn’t happen.”

Bearman and Ocon rue ‘frustrating’ British GP

Ocon, who was less at one with the upgraded VF-25 than his rookie team-mate, agreed that Haas must ensure it

Ocon had a torrid time driving the VF-25 despite the upgrade package and revealed that the team has a lot of work to do during its debriefing to ensure better execution on race weekends.

“It was a frustrating race,” he summarised. “We need to review so many things that have happened. There was a lot to review in that race.

“It wasn’t an easy one and not a fun one from inside the car. The car was also pretty difficult to drive the whole race. It was about trying to stay on track the whole race, so it wasn’t fun.”

Bearman, on the other hand, felt he had pace in hand to exploit at his home race, but lamented an incident-ridden weekend, augmented by his moment with Ocon.

“Yeah, it was a close moment. I need to review it with the team,” he said.

“I mean, it was messy. Of course, I had really warm tyres, everyone else had much cooler tyres and I had a lot more grip at that stage, but yeah, it was a mess.”

Esteban Ocon has denied taking pleasure in Alpine's struggles

Esteban Ocon has expressed that he doesn’t derive pleasure from seeing Alpine struggle in Formula 1 despite a contentious exit from the team in 2024.

Ocon moved to the Anglo-French marque in 2020 and established himself within the team, becoming an F1 race winner with the Enstone-based squad at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly’s arrival at the team in 2023 saw Alpine field an all-French driver line-up for the first time since 1982. Yet, the duo’s alliance had uneasy undertones of impending chaos given their torrid past as fierce karting rivals.

In Monaco last season, after Ocon tried a failed move down the inside of Gasly at Portier on the opening lap, the two team-mates came to blows.

Speculations rose about the Frenchman being shown the exit doors at Alpine, with an announcement arriving in July that he wouldn’t be renewing his deal.

Ocon did not even drive for the team at the season finale in Abu Dhabi as he opted to drive for his new team in the post-season test instead.

This year, the 28-year-old has tasted success in F1’s midfield with Haas, while Alpine has been languishing at the very bottom of the Constructors’ standings.

And while Ocon is under no illusions that he didn’t have a fairytale ending at Alpine, he isn’t particularly overjoyed to see his former employers struggle.

“You never smile to see someone struggling,” he told media including Motorsport Week.

“To me, it was very clear that I wanted to come here [at Haas] for a very long time.

“I took my decision, it was clear that we were not aiming for the same things with the team, and that I needed a new challenge, because we were not going to go forward together. We didn’t agree on so many things.”

Haas has been more competitive than Alpine to date in 2025

Ocon won’t count Alpine out in 2025 midfield battle

10 rounds into the season so far, Ocon has scored exactly double (22) of Alpine’s points total.

The team has been going through a period of transition once again, dovetailing between drivers Jack Doohan and Franco Colapinto, and facing instability in leadership positions after the resignations of both Team Principal Oliver Oakes and Renault CEO Luca de Meo.

Yet, Gasly believes that the team has been laying solid foundations for short and long-term success with Flavio Briatore at the team’s helm.

Ocon seems to concur with his former team-mate as he refuses to count Alpine out of the midfield battle this year.

“They’ve been quick in Bahrain and some of the tracks. They are going to be working on themselves as well,” he added.

Last season, Ocon and Gasly’s double-podium heroics at the Brazilian Grand Prix saw Alpine jump from ninth in the Constructors’ standings to sixth in the space of a single race weekend. And Ocon knows that lightning can strike twice.

“In one race, you can recover the deficit that you have. So even though they are last now, it doesn’t mean that this is where they will finish,” explained Ocon.

“So, we need to keep an eye on everyone and do the best we can on our side. But yeah, I definitely feel good here.

“As I said, Alpine will always remain a special place in my heart, having the winning car at home and what we’ve achieved together, but for sure, we will erase the late part of my career there.”

Esteban Ocon took issue with the slowing down tactics deployed by drivers in Monaco

Esteban Ocon has condemned the “horrible” tactic used during the 2025 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, where drivers deliberately slowed to aid teammates.

Although not personally instructed to employ this strategy, the Haas driver revealed that had he been asked, he would have refused to participate.

Originally used by the Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson slowed the drivers behind him enough to create a large gap, allowing his team-mate Isack Hadjar to complete the two mandatory pit stops and secure a sixth-place finish.

The Williams pair followed suit, which caused further drama, as the frustrated Mercedes of George Russell behind Alex Albon took matters into his own hands.

Into the Nouvelle Chicane, he went straight on and opted to take the penalty to aid his race instead of lingering behind the Thai-British driver.

When asked about the controversial tactics on display, Ocon was clear in his disapproval of the team orders and gamesmanship that undermined the spirit of racing.

“Yeah, that was not nice; it opens up for such team orders that are honestly not very clean,” he told media including Motorsport Week.

“It’s not a sport anymore if you start to do that.

“Yes, there’s always been some team orders in F1, but this is not what we like to see.

“To that extent, it’s honestly too much.

“Obviously, we have data everywhere, so you can see if people start lifting off [the] throttle in corners and they go suddenly three seconds quicker from one lap to another.

“You need to get into data, which would be difficult for the stewards and everyone, to show evidence.

“But I think to that extent, we need to make sure that this doesn’t become the normality.”

Gasly urges crackdown on slow-pace tactics at Monaco

The Frenchman secured a solid seventh-place finish around the streets of Monte Carlo without relying on such tactics.

He later revealed that a scenario was discussed where he might have been asked to do the same for his team-mate Oliver Bearman – but he made it clear he would have refused if called upon.

“On my side in the team, there was a scenario where Ollie was supposed to do that at some point for me, and I said I don’t want that to happen,” he added.

“Yes, we need to make a good race, but if you are Ollie at that stage, he’s already had a difficult weekend, and he wants to race as well on his side.

“It’s not a nice thing to be doing for all the others, but also for the second car in that race.”

His former team-mate at Alpine, Pierre Gasly, shared his thoughts on the matter, calling for greater action to be taken to combat such tactics.

“It doesn’t feel right that some drivers can drive a second off the pace and still not be overtaken,” Gasly told media including Motorsport Week.

“[It’s] something which needs to be analysed and see how to move forward because to me it’s one of the greatest weekends of the year, up to Saturday night, and then it turns into a massive frustration for everyone on Sunday.”

Esteban Ocon has said that he “can understand” the troubles Lewis Hamilton is having since the current Formula 1 season began amid his struggles to adapt at Ferrari.

Hamilton has been in an invidious position, balancing an integration into a new environment with a tricky SF-25, which has so far been underwhelming in performance.

Aside from a Sprint win in China, Hamilton has not found a happy medium with the car, which sees him seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, 90 points adrift of the top.

Ocon, who is also integrating into a new side in the shape of Haas, admitted that he can empathise with the tough acclimatisation process Hamilton is going through.

“It’s very difficult, especially when you change car philosophy,” Ocon told media including Motorsport Week.

“The Haas car and the Ferrari car have a lot of similarities, so I can relate to Lewis on that side.

“I have driven the Mercedes as well in the past, so it is a very different way of driving the car or extracting the potential of it.

“The car feels very different, so it is not easy for sure to adapt to that. But I am sure he will find a way very quickly.”

Esteban Ocon can empathise with the situation Hamilton is in

Hamilton’s extensive experience a hindrance

One of the obvious problems for Hamilton has been moving to a brand new team after such a long time with the same one, having completed 12 seasons with Mercedes.

When asked if he feels Hamilton can utilise his experience to overcome the problems he is facing, Ocon said his years in F1 might actually be a hindrance.

“It’s more the opposite way,” he said. “

“I think if you come from junior formulas and you go straight into that car, you put everything you have learned away and you just go into it and you learn a new thing again.

“Now with our experience, Lewis has much more experience than me, he’s driven a lot of different cars but a lot of the same ones as well for a long time.

“I can understand why it is not easy and I also know it is not easy for me or for Carlos [Sainz, at Williams], but we will get there.”

Esteban Ocon has praised his Haas engineering team – led by Laura Mueller – saying they ideally match his own personality as he settles into life with a new Formula 1 team.

The Frenchman joined the American squad after five seasons with Alpine – formerly Renault – this year, partnering British hotshot rookie Oliver Bearman.

Haas has enjoyed a reasonable start to the campaign, turning things around after a horror show opening round in Australia.

Ocon took fifth place in China, with Bearman also in the points, and an eighth place in Bahrain sees him currently on 14 points, leaving him ninth in the Drivers’ Championship.

It appears that much of Ocon’s integration into the team has stemmed from the relationship he is enjoying with his engineers, led by Mueller.

The German is the first full-time female race engineer in F1 history, and Ocon told media including Motorsport Week after the Miami Grand Prix, in which he finished 12th, how she and his other engineers are helping him amid the tight scheduling of the season so far.

“Ideally, you would have one race one week off, then another race to be able to process everything you do, but that’s how Formula 1 is at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve been working super well with Laura, with Sacha as well, with my team and Mike. We are [a] crew, 31, on the engineering side, the mechanics are also a huge part of it.

“Altogether, we’ve been learning from each other, knowing what to improve from race to race. As I’ve said in many interviews, it’s been awesome to see how much effort they put in, how motivated they are.

“They suit well with my personality, which is great. It’s also why the team has put Laura, Sacha and Mike into my side as well, because we match super well in terms of personality.”

With the help of his engineers, Ocon currently lies ninth in the World Championship standings

Is Haas environment the tonic Ocon needs?

It seemed that when at Alpine, Esteban Ocon seemed to have much of the team geared around him.

A charismatic Frenchman in a French team, Ocon was in an ideal place, but the dynamic appeared to be altered when he was given a new team-mate.

Pierre Gasly arrived from AlphaTauri, and it seemed all was not well. The pair clashed in Australia two years ago, and then again in Monaco last year.

It might be fair to say Ocon did not convey happiness from then on, and it signalled his exit from the team.

Now it seems that Ocon is more than content with his new surroundings, as he looks to help build on the team’s early progress.

Esteban Ocon has praised Haas team-mate Oliver Bearman, calling him “technically above” any rookie he’s seen in Formula 1 after a strong start to the season.

The British driver finished 14th on debut before going on a run of three successive points-scoring finishes in China, Japan and Bahrain.

Despite a DNF in the last race in Miami, Bearman has impressed as the second-best performing rookie in the standings, behind ex-Formula 2 stablemate Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The head-to-head record between the Haas’ drivers stands at 5-3 in Ocon’s favour across both qualifying and race results – the 20-year-old keeping tabs with his veteran team-mate.

However, collectively as a duo, Ocon and Bearman have amassed 20 points to date, leaving the team in a stable sixth position in the Constructors’ Championship.

Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the Frenchman hailed his partner in crime, who he believes has a keen eye for detail.

“Honestly, he’s been great, Ollie’s been amazing,” Ocon told media including Motorsport Week.

“He’s a super quick driver, super talented, very professional, very detailed on the car set-up.

“I think that’s straight away the thing I saw; technically, he’s above any rookies that I’ve seen in the past.

“He’s much more prepared than I was when I arrived in F1 or than any of our generation, I would say.

“Honestly, I think he has a bright future in Formula 1 – that is very clear.”

Oliver Bearman says he has been able to ‘learn quite a lot’ from his experience as a Haas and Ferrari reserve F1 driver

Bearman’s key lessons in lead-up to rookie season

Bearman made the step up to the Haas team following his final season in F2 last season.

Throughout 2024, however, he made appearances in F1, including his debut in the sport with Ferrari at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

After standing in for an unwell Carlos Sainz, Bearman later deputised for Haas in Baku and Sao Paulo due to Magnussen’s suspension and then illness.

Bearman credits those opportunities, along with his experience as an F1 reserve driver, for the technical knowledge that earned Ocon’s praise.

“Yeah, of course, I’ve had a lot of experiences over the years now with Ferrari, with my TPC running,” Bearman explained.

“But also just being in the track as a reserve driver last year, listening to all of the debriefs and all of the comments from the drivers, how they articulate what they’re feeling has been quite useful for me.

“Even being a bit behind the scenes on set-up meetings and stuff like that, understanding what direction they tend to take with the car based on limitations and stuff like that.

“I’ve been able to learn quite a lot, so that’s been useful.”
